trippy wave bleached denim

a cool and simple way to spruce up any piece of denim in your closet!

by abigail thielen

I recently received a pair of overalls from my sister (Thank you, Angie). And love them so much, but there was something lacking about them.

The problem with denim overalls on adults is that they can sometimes feel very farmer-esque, which isn’t exactly the aesthetic I am going for. I decided I needed to find a way to make these overalls definitively fun and cute and not like I frequent my local tractor supply store. I stumbled upon a TikTok that inspired me to pull out my bottle of Clorox and paint brush.

SUPPLIES
Bleach (I use about 1 cup)
Thin paint brush (It will get slightly damaged from the bleach)
Hydrogen Peroxide
Bucket (for soaking the denim)
And thus, I embarked on a 5 hour DIY journey filled with bleach fumes and many fashion podcasts. The DIY is fairly simple; it calls for painting waves on the pant legs, and adding volume to some of the peaks to give it a trippy-looking effect. This required patience and a couple layers of bleach to get the waves to be even. If you need more guidance, Sammy has an additional TikTok describing their technique:

After you finish bleaching your denim, neutralize the bleach by combining hydrogen peroxide and water in a bucket and let the denim soak for about 15 minutes. Drain the denim and put it through a normal wash cycle. Then ta-da! You have the most fun denim to ever exist!

I absolutely love the results of my overalls! Let me know if you try this DIY out, and I will talk to you next week!
