With the death of one of the most influential voices in fashion, comes the rise of his archival fashion and the reselling of his most famous pieces.
Thierry Mugler was a French fashion designer who became creative director and adviser to MUGLER. Launched in the 1970s, MUGLER rose to fame fast. He tested the limits with new silhouettes and his iconic hyperfeminine architectural take on fashion.
He was nontraditional in the sense that he tackled issues that weren’t talked about in fashion at that time, such as racism and ageism. Mugler was also one of the first to include Trans women in his shows, drag queens, and porn stars.
Designing for the most A list celebrities, Mugler was seen on a number of artists like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Grace Jones, David Bowie and Diana Ross. Mugler was also responsible for Demi Moore’s famous dress in Indecent Proposal, which ended up being coined the most famous dress of the 90’s.
With his passing this year, an icon will be missed. Mugler came back from retirement in 201 to design Beyonce’s tour outfits from her Sasha Fierce days and most recently his creations were spotted on Kim Kardashian at the MET GALA. With his death a hole was left in the fashion community, since Mugler was seen as the last creator that was truly avant-garde.
Here are past looks that truly cemented his reputation as a truly amazing designer:
